Butterfly Landing - God Knows Us

Our son Burk passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2015. Below is a post that we shared on facebook on April 18, 2015 to share the story of the butterfly that visited us at the top of Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park.

I want to share with you the story of the butterfly that happened to our family this past week. This experience was a sign to our family that God knows each of us and comforts us in our time of need.

Soon after the accident and we knew we would be in St. George for the burial, our son Nate suggested we hike Angel’s Landing as a family in honor of Burk. We all love Zion National Park and quickly agreed this would be a great family outing.

Last Saturday we took that hike in memory of Burk. This is one of the most grueling and treacherous hikes in the park.

It was not easy going up. We took it slow and tried to enjoy the beautiful scenery as we climbed. As we made it to the first plateau, before you get to the point where you need to hold onto chains to assist you in climbing, we stopped to rest for a few minutes and take some pictures. After making it to the top of the climb, we high-fived and hugged each other and enjoyed the beautiful view of the canyon.

We rested for a few minutes, then took more pictures (because that is what I do!) I was taking a picture of our good friends Shallan and Avery John and a yellow flash appeared in the frame just as I was taking the picture! I did not know what it was…but after reviewing the picture…we had been photo bombed by a butterfly! I showed it to Avery and Shallan and it brought tears to our eyes because we saw it as a sign from God that Burk was with us!

As we rested and took more pictures, the butterfly appeared again...only this time is slowly descended until it landed on my wife's shoe...and stayed there for 10-15 seconds...a sign for us that God loves us, and that Burk is with Him and he is safe and well. We shed some more tears and hugged each other.

God is good. He is our Father. He loves all of us and knows what we need. Burk is with Him...moving along the next phase of his eternal journey.
